The July Driver of the Month is Thomas Ennels of Seaford, Delaware. He drives for Walmart Transportation at the Smyrna Distribution Center. Tom began his professional driving career in 1969 and has been with Walmart since 2006. In his 46 years behind-the-wheel he has driven commercial motor vehicles more than 4 million miles and has experience in many different vehicle configurations.
Tom’s driving and safety record is superb. In spite of all the potentially dangerous situations he has encountered during his long career, Tom has been involved in only one accident. That was in 2013 when a car ran into his legally parked rig–a non-preventable crash. He has a clean driving record and no violations on roadside inspections in the past year.
A familiar face at DMTA Truck Driving Championships, Tom has earned the right to participate in the National TDC twice. Of course, he has taken home trophies from Delaware’s TDC several times.
Bringing a good attitude to work is important to Tom. In his own words he reports that “Everyday I have near misses where vehicles cut me off, but I yield the right of way to avoid incidents.” He thinks it is important to comply with the move-over law. “I always move over for emergency vehicles, vehicles that are disabled on the shoulder and vehicles stopped for other reasons.”
Tom’s supervisor says, “This driver is on the Accident Review Committee. He won his class at the state TDC two years in a row. He is a Walmart store ambassador. Tom is a member of Walmart’s Safety Team and was Driver of the Month for Walmart in Dec. 2014. He volunteers for the Special Olympics Delaware “World’s Largest Truck Convoy” every year and volunteers for various charity events.”
DMTA salutes Thomas Ennels for an outstanding record in safety and professionalism. He is truly representative of the best of America’s professional drivers. Join us in wishing him the best of luck in the Driver of the Year competition.
