DMTA sponsors three major events each year and participates in others as a representative of Delaware’s trucking industry.  Our major events are:

  • The Annual Delaware Truck Driving Championships (TDC) and Technician Competition
  • Annual Golf Outing
  • Driver/Technician Awards Banquet

The Annual Delaware Truck Driving Championships and Technician Competition is held each year in May at the Delaware State Fairgrounds.  For information on the 2018 Competition click here. This event showcases Delaware’s finest truck drivers and heavy-duty truck technicians.  These hard-working men and women get the opportunity to showcase their skills in friendly competition against their peers.

On the driver side there are nine classes of competition.  First, second and third place finishers in each class win awards plus there is a special award for the driver performing the best pre-trip inspection.  The driver with the best overall score is named Grand Champion.  First place finishers in each class then have the opportunity to move on and compete at the National Truck Driving Championships held each year in August and sponsored the the American Trucking Associations.

Heavy-truck technicians are just as important to trucking as are drivers.  It takes highly skilled technicians to keep modern high tech trucks rolling on our nation’s highways and delivering the goods.  Industry maintenance professionals evaluate the SuperTech/Trailer Tech competitors by having them solve real-world type problems at a variety of testing stations.

DMTA’s Annual Golf Outing is an annual fund-raising event where all participants have a good time.  DMTA has two goals for this event.

The first is to raise money for the Delaware Technical Community College DMTA Scholarship Fund.  DMTA and Delaware Tech award an annual scholarship to a deserving student who is enrolled in the Commercial Transportation Certificate Program at the college.  The program is a PTDI certified truck driver training program with a long history of turning out excellent truck drivers.

Scholarship eligibility is driven by common sense.  The scholarship recipient must be a Delaware resident, over 21 years of age, have a good driving record, pass a DOT physical and drug screen, possess a CDL Learner’s Permit, apply for student financial aid and demonstrate financial need.  The scholarship fund was created in 2000 and has awarded 15 scholarships to date.

The other goal for the golf outing is so the association can continue to fund the events and programs that benefit our state’s drivers, technicians, and Delaware trucking and truck related businesses.  It takes money to make all of our programs work, and member dues do not cover DMTA’s entire budget.

Our final major event of the year is the Driver/Technician Awards Banquet.  This event is where DMTA members come together for a great evening of food and fellowship as we recognize those drivers, technicians, and others who have contributed to DMTA and Delaware’s trucking industry throughout the year.

We recognize our Drivers of the Month, the DMTA Scholarship recipient, the winner of the annual John Chadick AwardDMTA’s Team of Champions* and our Driver of the Year.  We also hold an auction that is a lot fun for all participants as well as being a good fund-raiser for the scholarship fund.

*DMTA’s Team of Champions consists of those who took first place trophies in the Truck Driving Championships and represented Delaware in the National Truck Driving Championships, and the SuperTech and Trailer Tech winners who represented Delaware in ATA’s Technology and Maintenance Council (TMC) competition.
